I am passionate about technology and recruitment. This blog is about the intersection of both, keeping an eye on what is happening in both industries in Ireland and abroad and understanding, commentating and theorising about what is happening on the gleam of the knife of recruitment innovation and social media.

Any one in Ireland want to write some "Recruitment Haiku"?
Should recruiters be focusing on how to sell JDs and companies in 120 characters are less? Most definitely "YES"!!! Twitter allows for 140 characters but I think recruiters should learn how to describe their opportunities in no more than 120 characters ( i'd recommend keeping 20 charcerters for retweets and hashtags). Learning how to do this is going to be an important skill in leveraging social media for recrutiment purposes.
Next time you have a job offer you want to send out via social media why not think about summarising it in 12O characters and Tweeting it, putting it in your Facebook update or even placing it into your LinkedIn update bar.
You could very well publish your job opportunity in 3 locations via social media in less than 360 characters in less than 3 minutes if you did it well and where pretty quick.
I'm trying to get better at doing this and one way I think that may help is writing Haiku poetry!!! Haiku is an ancient Japanese form of earthly poetry that typically means using 10 to 14 syllables in 3 metrical phrases of 5, 7 and 5. Haiku typically contain a kigo, or seasonal reference, depending on what season the poem is written.
Here are some beautiful examples:
the wind of Mt. Fuji
I've brought on my fan!
a gift from Edo
old pond . . .
a frog leaps in
water’s sound
Here's my awful attempt at some Recruitment Haiku!
tweet touched cv
an autumn smile
A new job is born
or
recession woe
another no response
a tear drop falls
You can learn more about Haiku here.
I reckon if you can master Haiku you'll be great at mastering the art of 3 x 120 x 3 social media job posting.
These new skills will help recruiters and hiring managers all over Ireland attract potential employees to their career sites and a far more richer experience with full length job descriptions, video presentations, micro-sites, articles and a whole other raft off employee value proposition collateral.
So let's get some recrutiment haiku flowing in Ireland. You can pick up this thread in an Irish Recrutiers LinkedIn discussion I just created.
Here are a few videos to help you get in the swing of it :)

Who wants to learn to build an iPhone job app?
I've gone to a couple of iPhone app conferences now and it's very interesting to see the variety of business men and women from all different types of industries that have been at them to learn about harnesssing the power of the iPhone platform. For those of you who know how to code and have been scratching, and twitching to know more about iPhone's fastly growing ubquitous platform than more than likely you'll be very glad to hear about the launch of Apps School which will run its first course from the 20th to 24th of July in Dublin and is built for programmers with strong object-orientated programming skills to teach how to use Apple's iPhone Software Deveroper Kit.
The course, co-designed by the very talented Patrick Collison, co-founder of start-up Auctomatic, will be taught by SQT training with Havok intern and Intel Open Source Award winner Daniel Heffernan on board as tutor.
The course is very reasonable at €1,500 euros and the syllabus looks great for beginners. So far those recruiters amongst us that know a little C++ or Java or have access to a developer who you can afford to send on this course it might be a very cheap way to enter into the world of phone apps and launch Ireland's first Jobs App!
Who knows maybe you'll even better the iTie iPhone app that teaches you how to prepare you tie before an interview :) And it's free. Thank God for that!
Have a great w/end

Dreamjob.com.br - brillant ad!
For those of you that don't know me too well let me tell you that I have worked and lived in Brazil on many occassions and I consider it very much my second home after Ireland.
I like to monitor the job market in Brazil as much as possible and I've been paying attention of late to a lot of the pay for job searching services that job seekers need to use when searching on niche job boards in Brazil. An interesting business model that doesn't work in Ireland but is quite often the norm in Sao Paulo and Rio. A bit like a job seeker in Ireland having to pay 50 euros a month to use Irish Jobs and register their CV online.
In looking at some of this research I came across a really funny video for a new job board, that would give the big budgets of Monster and CareerBuilder a run for there money:www.dreamjob.com.br.

Voice Search - Square is the new round - The Future of Recruitment is in the Cloud!
Wow! I can't believe it's that long ago but I think it's 2001 when I wrote an article for Monster called "How will XML change the face of recruitment". 7 years and XML has had a huge part to play in driving ATS systems together allowing multiple posting and driving us all towards a more common cloud computing experience. It is truely amazing the technology that recruiters now posses. The future is here but in a lot of cases it's just not distrbuted amongst us evenly. One example of this is voice search technology which maybe in the next 7 years will have a big part to play in how we break away from our addiction to laptops and desktops and start to use mobile devices more in how we recruit. Who knows we'll probably be even talking into our car mirrors to make a search one of these days for a senior credit analyst or a purchasing manager (for new readers who haven't checked out my little screenplay on searching on your car mirror check it out here)!
Here's a video to tell what I mean:
And this is only the start!Windows Mobile, iPhones and Android are all working on improving their technologies in this space. Already Google's launch of Google Mobile Apps in iTunes a couple of weeks ago is setting high standards for voice search on your mobile device. So why not do some searching for candidates on the web or on LinkedIn are Facebook while you're queuing up in Marks and Spencers for those addictive choclete cookies or why not use that valueable time when waiting for your next Ryan Air flight to Faro!
