It's been a very busy few days with lots of recruitment conferences taking place around the world with my own team in the US presenting at SocialRecruitingSummit and then a number of announcements from the world of tech. The one that caught my attention was the launch of Twitter's new web site last night.
While a lot of us use shiny tools to use Twitter the vast majority of people access Twitter through ww.twitter.com. The new site is rolling out to users all over the world over the next couple of weeks and although Twitter are dressing this up as some sort of great new user it experience (it will improve things). It seems like this is a big play to support the company's revenue generating model.
Here is some of the commentary from the web on what some people think: TechBytes here and TechCrunch and here.

As ever thanks to the annual sponsors of Irish Recruiters: Prima.ie, Loadzabjobs.ie, Arithon.com and Hays.ie!
I am passionate about technology and recruitment. This blog is about the intersection of both, keeping an eye on what is happening in both industries in Ireland and abroad and understanding, commentating and theorising about what is happening on the gleam of the knife of recruitment innovation and social media.

LinkedIn Deepens Integration with Twitter
It's been on the cards for a while that LinkedIn has been steadily trying to make its platform more social and interactive with users. LinkedIn integrated with Twitter a few months ago, allowing users to Tweet from the platform and pull Tweets into the network with a #in hashtag. In fact, over 1,000,000 users have tied their LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. And this year the network added the ability to “follow” companies, taking a page from both Twitter and Facebook. Today, LinkedIn is furthering its Twitter integration by allowing members to easily find and keep track of their LinkedIn connections on Twitter and more, essentially becoming a full-fledged client

Google announces two Twitter updates
Yesterday Google came out with two Twitter updates worth checking out.

The first is a “replay” feature for public Twitter posts. Look for it as “Updates” on the left options sidebar. This feature is still rolling out, if you didn't hear about it already check here.
The second Twitter related feature comes out of Google Labs and is called Google Follow Finder; you can use it at http://www.followfinder. googlelabs.com/

Twitter List for Irish Recruiters - It's time we create one! And don't forget to take the Twitter Poll!
In the last few months it looks like there has been an explosion of recruiters in Ireland using Twitter. Here are some of the handles I know of. Please add yours if you aren't on the list already to the discussion I started in the Irish Recruiters LinkedIn Group. Even if you are on the list already but know of handles that are not on it please go in and add them as a comment. Will be interesting to see the category breakdown for example how many or employers versus agencies versus job boards, etc.

If you are looking for hashtag to discuss all things recruitment in Ireland, feel free to use #irishrecruiters like a lot of us at the moment.
If you get a chance please add yourself to my members list: http://twitter.com/irishrecruiters/members
Once we get a comprehensive list in place I'll try categorise the list, put it in an excel sheet and send it out to those whose handles are on the list. This report will be particularly useful to find out what recruiters are specialising in specific disciplines and will allow you a means to form wider and deeper micro-twitter groups to drive conversation in your own specialism's.
Finally, give me your best guess as to how many recruiters in Ireland have a professional Twitter account by taking the poll http://polls.linkedin.com/p/81625/zkdsr I’ll circle back in a few months with what I think the answer actually is.

Twitter's new @anywhere platform
Twitter are taking on Facebook Connect with their own new service called @anywhere. This is another step towards integration with the web and a number of 3rd parties like eBay, Digg, Salesforce.com, Bing and much more are queuing up for a piece of the action.
Basically what is does is when you visit a website that supports @anywhere, you’ll be able to follow any Twitter account associated with that site without navigating away to the profile at Twitter.com. The Twitter blog suggests that the platform will let you follow a participating journalist from his or her byline. It also suggests that you’ll be able to tweet about a YouTube video without interrupting it.
Twitter says the above-mentioned items are are “just the beginning.” Integrating with the rest of the web is a wise move and I'm looking forward to learn more about it in mid April when they say they'll be letting the world know more.

LinkedIn signs deal with Twitter
The idea is simple: When you set your status on LinkedIn you can now tweet it as well, amplifying it to your followers and real-time search services like Twitter Search and Bing. And when you tweet, you can send that message to your LinkedIn connections as well, from any Twitter service or tool.
The feature will roll out to everyone over the next couple of days. Great deal for both companies but especially for LinkedIn.

Cool one tap search and apply iPhone recruitment app launched
While on my travels in the Middle East last week and learning all about the 30% nationalisation quota's that multi-nationals have to live by when hiring in Saudi Arabia and the 50% quota that is applied by the Angolan government I got a mail from Bill Fischer. Bill for those of you that didn't see his excellent presentation at the last Irish Recrutiers conference is one of the co-foundes of Twitter Job Search. While in transit I missed a lot of news from the world of recrutiment and I also missed Bill's mail to me telling me about their new iPhone app. I'm glad to say I'm back on terra firma in Dublin, and it's good to be home.
There are a lot of apps out there that allow you search for jobs but what's cool about Twitter Job Search's is that it allows individuals to find and apply for these jobs with a single tap. Very cool!
To download the app you can follow the download link on their homepage: (www.TwitterJobSearch.com). Try it for yourself, it's worth checking out.

Google deal with Twitter too!
Just out on their blog a few hours after the Microsoft announcement:
“Given this new type of information and its value to search, we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results. We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months. That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you’ll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.”
Interestingly, with two large partnerships in place this probably proves that Twitter are in it for the long haul and won't be selling anytime soon!

The gloves are off: Facebook offically takes on Twitter with @mentions
Looks like the world of Twitter has now got a littler more interesting with Facebook's recent announcment to launch a very similar service itself called @mentions on their own platform.
Here is Facebook engineer Tom Occhino’s explanation of the new feature:
Here is Facebook engineer Tom Occhino’s explanation of the new feature:
Now, when you are writing a status update and want to add a friend’s name to something you are posting, just include the “@” symbol beforehand. As you type the name of what you would like to reference, a drop-down menu will appear that allows you to choose from your list of friends and other connections, including groups, events, applications and Pages. Soon, you’ll be able to tag friends from applications as well. The “@” symbol will not be displayed in the published status update or post after you’ve added your tags. You can learn more here and here.
Friends you tag in your status updates will receive a notification and a Wall post linking them to your post. They also will have the option to remove tags of themselves from your posts. We hope that tagging your status updates and others posts from the Publisher will enable you to share in a more meaningful and engaging way, and connect with even more people. We’re rolling this feature out over the course of the next few weeks, so you may not see the new feature just yet.

New Twitter Front Page Arrives - It's no longer just about you
Twitter has a new homepage. If you are a user of Twitter already you're not going to see a lot of it as you'll be already logged in but for all those people around the world who still have not logged into Twitter they will be greeted by this new home page which now has 23 topics covering the collective discussions of what is happening on Google at any given time. It's now the world's most powerful breaking news aggregator in real time. Contrasting the old page and the new page gives us some hints of the company's ambition.
Here’s the old description text:
This is an evolutionary change. Twitter was first conceived as a place to update your friends and interested parties on your life. It was focused and very much about you. Now in its place the focus is now about the entire world.
Here’s the old description text:
“Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing? And here’s the new text:
“Share and discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world”They have moved away from the focus on your personal network and have now started focusing on real time news and discovery for world events. Effectively for me anyway this is almost a step towards a more hybrid social networking/Google news type real-time platform.

Want to know how to translate your Twits
Recently, I've begun to write the odd Twit in Portuguese and Spanish. A useful tool that has come out to let me do this a little quicker and with less grammatical errors is Twinsalator. This could be a helpful tool when braodcasting to candidates that you are seeking to hire from other nationalities.
While you could (roughly) translate your Tweets by pasting them into Google Translate, new service Twinslator wants to make it even easier, allowing you to write a tweet, translate it into another language and (optionally) post both messages.

Nice! Bing Tweet Integration
Microsoft's new Bing search engine was the first of the big search engines to integrate Twitter into results. Yesterday, Microsoft’s fledgling search tool has gone one step further with Twitter launching BingTweets, a separate site that combines Bing search with Twitter search and trending topics.
There will be more from the Bing team in terms of Twitter integration in the future, however. The Bing team writes, “many people share their thoughts on Twitter, and search engines don’t currently do a great job of capturing that real-time content. We designed Bing to help you make faster, more informed decisions, and, since people often turn to real-time content to help them make decisions, BingTweets was a logical next step.”

TwittAround and Augmented Reality (AR)
A lot of people are calling Augmented Reality AR) the new mobile killer app. Certainly there has been a lot of debate about it of late and how it will revolutionising the way we live. Even Twitterland has caught onto this new emerging field and now there is a new beta augmented reality out for the new iPhone called TwittAround. Interessting to see that Apple has not opened up there full SDK for augmented reality yet, but there is plenty of folk petitioning them to do so. When this happens expect a flood of new AR apps on the market.

TwitterJobSearch.com Adds Video CV Functionality
Looks like Bill Fischer and his team have been very busy of late one of the products of which is TwitterJobSearch has added support for Video CVs to its product. This enables job seekers to attach a Video CV or even a "personal video elevator pitch" to job offers that have been posted to Twitter with a single click.
The new service allows individuals to quickly record a Video CV and then attach that Video to a job that has been posted in Twitter. By simplifying the process of creating the video and by developing a single-click way to get that Video CV in front of the hiring manager, they're hoping to make that functionality more widely available.
"Recruiters are now faced with the challenge of having to quickly evaluate multiple candidates, and video can help in these assessments," commented Bill Fischer, Co-Founder of TwitterJobSearch. "We're tracking and/or working with companies in 17 countries that are using Twitter as part of their recruitment efforts. Our products build a layer of services on the Twitter infrastructure that connects job seekers and employers."
Bill is going to be presenting at Part 2 of the Future of Recruitment conference. I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say on the day and to get his perspective on what the future of micro-blogging holds for the recruitment industry, should be a very interesting presentation.

Google to lauch micro-blogging search engine?
Search engines's like IceRocket have integrated Twitter searches for some time now. When are Google going to do the same? We already have Google blog search, so it seems like a logical next step for Google to introduce a Twitter like index feature for the public. What will be interesting will be what approach they take to do so. Rumours abound that they have been recently rebuffed with their attempt to buy Twitter so I would guess instead of "buy" it's now a case of "build".
So what should they be studying at the moment to decide on what they'll build. Twitter's search engine has two important drawbacks. It's limited to Twitter and results or sorted by date. Other search engines like Tweefind try at least sort Twitter posts by relevancy and search engines like Twingly try index multiple microblogging sites. I reckon none of them have hit the marke yet. I think Google will take a much more holistic view on the searchability of the index and the presentaiton of the results. Maybe a company like Topsy is company they should take their lead from. They've done a great job with their UI and the engine is gaining in popularity.
Another interesting sub plot in all of this will be if Twitter tries to stop Google's bots from spidering and indexing their sites or whether they will give them access up front like they have IceRocket. Maybe Google have already anticipated this and it is just a matter of time that we see Google simply bring out their own Twitter functinoality in Gmail or Wave and they create their own. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with but whatever it they need it soon. In the meantime check out the video on the very cool Topsy.

Twitter founder set to start new company
Jack Dorsey
sent out a tweet
letting his followers know that he was, “Getting ready to embark on something new and entirely different. Excited!” The new company has been codenamed "Squirrel". From what I've scraped off the grid what I learnt so far is it's a service that allows anyone with an iPhone to become a seller. A bit like wireless credit card swipers you can see in most restaurents and shops on Grafton Street and anywhere else in Ireland, you can carry around your iPhone and take payments. From what I can gather so far it seems like a Mobile version of PayPal. Squirrel will be a physical device that attaches easily to the smart device as well as an application you download from an app store.
