Like the recent tour in the US reported on this blog recently Monster have now turned their attention to Europe. Today in Business Wire, here, you can learn about these free career fairs that will kick off in France and Holland in June.
“We’re looking forward to working with employers across Europe to facilitate the important task of helping people back into work. This tour will extend our efforts across the U.S., where our Keep America Working tour has been a great success, visiting 25 cities to-date and attracting tens of thousands of job seekers. The U.S tour will call at 140 locations by the end of 2009,” said Andrea Bertone, senior vice president, Monster Western Europe. “Monster is ideally positioned to deliver these events through our strong existing relationships with employers, and our broad familiarity as the leading career Web site among consumers.”
I am passionate about technology and recruitment. This blog is about the intersection of both, keeping an eye on what is happening in both industries in Ireland and abroad and understanding, commentating and theorising about what is happening on the gleam of the knife of recruitment innovation and social media.

Monster Worldwide Reports First Quarter 2009 Results
Monster Worldwide has just come out with their first quarter report and as expected it total revenue declined 31% to $254 million, compared with $366 million in the comparable quarter of 2008.Timothy Yates, Monster’s CFO, during the quarter call, addressed operating expenses, including layoffs both here and in China since acquiring ChinaHR.com last year. “Excluding ChinaHR, we ended the first quarter with almost 400 fewer associates compared with the fourth quarter of 2008,” Yates said. “We also reduced headcount in China by nearly 300 full time associates and a significant number of temporary employees during the first quarter. As a result, total headcount declined 10 percent.”
Monster are also following suit with many other companies and are planning for much more rationalisation:
Sal Iannuzzi, chairman, commented that . “This quarter we’ve made decisions which impact the compensation of all our employees. Merit increases, 401K contributions, and cash incentive compensation have been suspended this year. Any incentive compensation for 2009 will only be paid in the form of four year vesting equity…these actions ensure that our employees will share in our growth as the economy recovers.”
He also talked about Trovix acquisition. “Last year we acquired Trovix to further ramp up our internal technology to provide seekers with more targeted searches. All indications are that Trovix will provide dramatic improvement in results. We are confident we will execute a full implementation by the end of the year with a customer beta roll-out in May.”

RecruitIreland offers free job posting to Irish Employers.
Only a few months ago Monster USA announced a campaign called the "Keep America Working Tour" that has the company embarking on a tour of 140 cities this year to set up job clinics and assist the unemployed get back to work. So far feedback on the events have been positive.
Likewise, RecruitIreland are getting creative. When Dell was hit with its large set of redundancies in Limerick the company soon after offered free job postings to all Limerick employers. It has now gone one step further and offered free job postings to all employers in Ireland.
On their blog today they wrote:
"This week we launched a new campaign offering free advertising to employers in Ireland - the aim of this campaign is to provide support to businesses at a time when they most need it and also to be a "one stop shop" as such for jobseekers. We want to offer you a complete service whereby when you log onto the website you will find all vacancies in Ireland in the one place - we hope by offering free advertising to employers we will facilitate this."
This is a clever but controversial move by the company and one that should see the a lot of jobs that are live and offered by internet savy employers in the country being aggregated onto their board. It will makes sense for a signifigant amout of employers that they post their jobs on the site now that it is free and job seekers will be happier as they can view more jobs in one place. However I question if RecruitIreland will be denting future revenue streams in the future from the important recruitment agency companies that make up a signifigant chunk of their client base. I wonder is the offer open to all recruitment agencies as well? It wasn't obvious from reading the announcement on their site if it was or not. If not, I wonder will agencies view this as an attenuation of their brands in the market?
Recently it has been more evident that a new set of outplacement and CV clinic services and products are entering the market with IrishJobs for example setting up Horizon Outplacement As the recession moves on we will no doubt see more innovation in the market. I wonder when Tesco's will decide to enter the market. TescoJobs.ie could be an interesting move into the industry or I wonder will Michael O'Leary at some stage look at the similar technology behind his RyanAir web site model and also enter into the market with RyanAirJobs.ie. Probably long odds on both. You'd be best served putting your money on Ireland winning the next Eurovision. However, I'd be far more willing to bet on a lot more change and response in the coming months. Recruitment providers will work harder to build new and foster deeper relationships with job seekers and clients. RecruitIreland again, have seemed to grasp this concept well by introducing new functionality on their home site where they specifically call out a section called Web 2.0 and RecruitIreland.com which allows job seekers interact with their web site by offering them the option to follow them on Twitter, Bebo or by RSS. They also provide an option to download a simple App or join their group to use FaceBook to facilitate their search. I'm suprised that other job boards haven't followed suit already and I have no doubt more will in the future. It will be interesting to see which will be the first to offer a full mobile recruiting advertising campaign targetted to mobile smart phones. I'll be talking more about this topic and web 2.0 recruitment tactics at "The Future of Recruitment Conference" on the 3rd of June. I'm also looking forward to debating RecruitIreland's free
PS - Apologies about the illuminous links font that has mysteriously arrived on the blog today. Looks like there are some problems with Blogspot which Google will hopefully rectify soon.

New Recruitment Model in the UK gets Dragon's backing!
Web Recruit has just come out with a very interesting new business model which I believe has set the tone for the restrucring that is inevitably going to happen with the recruitment industry over the next 18 months.
This new model is a clear response to the question I asked on the Irish Recruiters LinkedIn discussion board a number of months ago. Is the day of paying for job posts on job boards without getting a guaranteed hire from your investment gone? Web Recruit and James Cann of Dragon's Den fame seem to think so.
James has now recently become the chairman of Web Recruit and they are now offering a "flat fee" online recruitment service guranteed to fill your vacancy from £295, or your money back. If you don't make your placement in 4 weeks you get a refund.
In 2009 and 2010 I believe in the Irish industry some of the strongest companies that will come out of this recession will be those that can offer bundles services to their clients. It's going to be very interesting to watch how the job board industry in Ireland reacts to this, if at all! The ones that react first may get invaluable client loyalty that may help them leap frog their competitors and help them ride out the recession much easier. Certainly, a topic worth discussion in one of the up and coming Tuesday Clubs.

Saongroup continue their impressive growth - opportunity knocking on recessionary times!
It's not something you hear a lot of people in the Irish press talking about to often but Denis O'Brien and Leslie Buckley have been consistent and tenacious in their vision of creating one of the biggest job board portfolios in the world. Since there acquisition in Irish Jobs from John Feeley in 1995 they have been growing and diversifying ever since. The list of acquisitions they have made and the number of current opportunities they have in their own company are interesting and caused me to dig a little deeper.
On their own web site they state: "saongroup.com is now one of the fastest growing Irish owned online companies in the world, with offices in 10 countries across 4 continents. saongroup.com has its head office is Dublin, Ireland and employs more the 1,700 people across the globe".
Being one of the fastest growing Irish owned companies in the world may sound a bit "quixotic" but it's very much true! Looking from afar and having studies closely what Career Builder and Monster have done and tried to do over the last number of years what Saaongroup has done has been very impressive in comparison.
The portfolio consists of, and this is only some of it:
The company is currently expanding aggressively in India with the recent launches of http://www.myjobsinpune.com/ in Sept 07 and then a recent second expansion in http://www.myhyderabadjobs.com/. I've checked and http://www.mybangalorejobs.com/ and http://www.mydelhijobs.com/ are functioning job boards as well so maybe they've gone ahead and registered the domain and got these set up already. Maybe these are simply target looking companies that the group may go after. Get ready for Goa, Jauiper, Cochin and the other big hubs to follow. Basically, anywhere there is a concentration of 5 million or more people on the planet where internet penetration is growing Denis and Leslie will want a job board. Get ready next for Nanjing, Dalin and Shenzhen in China. Actually, it seems like that is exactly what the company is planning by the looks of some of its vacancies on its career site. Interestingly, they have a regional CEO/COO job in China where they are looking for an individual with 10+ years experience, willing to travel and who can speak Madrin and English. The role will report into the regional CEO and will have control of P&L, expansion and employee motivation. Having been to China myself 3 times now and about to go again in February to train Microsoft's recruiters some deep sourcing techniques I've had a chance to immerse myself in the China recruitment industry and study it from afar. It certainly fits into the emerging market category that Saaogroup have targeted for expansion.
The downturn in the global econonomy presents fantastic opportunities for those companies that have a strong balance sheet. Anne Hegarty in CPL, Brian Murphy in Premier Group and all at Saaongroup must be looking forward to 2009 and the acquisition trail ahead!
